Organ Donation

The Facts, The Faces and The Future

1. Executive Summary: ‘Organ Donation: The Facts, The Faces and The Future’is a Cause-driven documentary that the ‘Heritage Movies-Nepal’ is going to make with an aim to enhance public awareness on the necessity and significance of organ donation. A non-profit charitable initiative, the documentary will have two separate versions, in Nepali and English. It will have THREE key components:
1. Sharing of nerve-tickling but motivating experiences by Nepal’s topmost transplant surgeons (including Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha, Nepal’s No. 1 Transplant Surgeon), and organ donors and recipients (including Mr. Pemba Sherpa, the only person to have conquered Mt. Everest, the highest point on Earth, with a transplanted kidney ),

2. Global scenario of organ donation and transplants vis-à-vis that in Nepal, and 3. The development of artificial organs in labs and their potential impacts on the fate and future of human societies. Given the multi-dimensional essence of the story, the 60+ minutes may appear too short, yet the message that this ‘Movie with

a Mission’ leaves behind will be such that it breaks borders and helps communities and countries come closer despite their divergent castes, colors and creeds. The message it conveys is clear: Organs donated by a person after his/her death can save eight end-stage people and give a ‘new life’ to several other people, and with the facts as such, will there be a more virtuous and sacred act than it, the donation of organs?

Evidently, the central topic in the documentary— ‘The Rebirth’ — revolves around some key social and humanitarian dimensions of Organ Donation. The message itconveys is clear: Organs donated by a person after his/her deathcan save eight end-stage people and give eye-sight to two people, and with the facts as such, will there be amore virtuous and sacred actthan it, the donation of organs?

His passion for this project is a result of over five years of extensive researches and studies, which culminated in the concrete concept for THIS documentary, as well as a short movie and a feature film, both under the same name 'The Rebirth: Life After the Last Breath' and under the same theme: Organ Donation.

‘Kathmandu: A Tale of Toils of a Sinking Civilization’ (a Cause-focused Documentary in Nepali with English subtitles) and ‘The Blind by Heart’ (a short movie in Nepalbhasa with English subtitles) are the two of Mr. Amatya’s latest audio-visual creations besides a number of books and over 300 published articles on different topics to his credit. Of them, ‘The Blind by Heart’ had bagged the Second Prize in a short movies’ competition held in Kathmandu in June 2022, whereas ‘Kathmandu: A Tale of Toils of a Sinking Civilization’ has been honored with the ‘Best Documentary Award-2025’ in Kathmandu in June 2025. 14. Director’s Statement: ‘Organ Donation: The Facts, The Faces and The Future’ is more than a documentary for me—it is a journey of compassion, courage, and the continuity of life.
In Nepal and many parts of the world, myths, fears, and lack of awareness continue to overshadow the life-saving power of organ donation. I felt a strong responsibility as a filmmaker and a social entrepreneur to bring the hidden stories of donors, recipients, and medical pioneers to light. For me, the act of donating an organ is the highest form of generosity—it is the gift of life itself. So, this film is my humble attempt to honor those who give, to support those who wait, and to inspire societies to embrace organ donation as a shared responsibility.
I believe cinema has the power not only to inform but also to transform. With ‘Organ Donation: The Facts, The Faces and The Future’, my hope is to spark conversations in families, communities, and policy circles, so that one day, no one has to die waiting for an organ.
