1. Executive Summary The Snowstorm: An Untold Story of the Trans-Himalayan Silk Road’ is a historic film inspired by a 19th-century Nepalbhasa (Newari) classic tragedy. At its heart lies the poignant tale of a newly-wed couple in Kathmandu, torn apart when the husband—enchanted by the promise of gold and the unspoiled grandeur of Tibet—joins a trade caravan bound for Lhasa.
While the narrative focuses on the sorrow of a Newar family, its resonance extends far beyond, offering a window into the socio-economic life that unfolded on both sides of the Himalayas. Rooted in the 7th-century marriage of Nepal’s Princess Bhrikuti to Tibet’s King Songtsen Gampo, the cross-border trade not only shaped the destinies of families and societies but also bound Central and South Asia together.
With Kathmandu and Lhasa as pivotal crossroads, this trade fostered prosperity and cultural exchange, yet carried deep sorrows—the heartbreak of broken families and the perilous treks across unforgiving mountain passes.
In essence, ‘The Snowstorm’ is a powerful ‘audio-visual book’ that brings to life the socio-economic dimensions of the centuries-old Trans-Himalayan trade while celebrating the harmony, resilience, and shared humanity that once united the diverse peoples of Nepal, Tibet, China, Mongolia, and Central Asia.
To share this history with the world, the film employs advanced cinematic technology. It is a multilingual production, with characters speaking their native languages—Nepalbhasa, Nepali, Sherpa, Tibetan, and English—for authenticity. To ensure its echoes reach global audiences, the movie will also be dubbed in English, Hindi, Spanish, and Vietnamese, with subtitles in several other international languages.

Along his journey, he encounters the warmth, helpfulness, and friendliness of the Tibetan people, whose kindness sustains him in the harsh Trans-Himalayan landscapes. But tragedy strikes at home: misled by false news of her husband’s death, the grief-stricken young bride succumbs to the cursed ritual of Sati, leaving her ailing mother-in-law in solitude. When the husband returns with newfound fortune, he discovers a world emptied of love. Shattered, he renounces his wealth and chooses the path of a monk, seeking solace in a distant Buddhist monastery.
